101 Things To Do With a Slow Cooker

by Stephanie Ashcraft and Janet Eyring

Both of these books make cute gifts for whoever is hosting a future shower. These books are inexpensive and would make great gifts for the new bride or for the cookbook collector.

Despite the availability of research on the Internet, there continues to be die-hard cookbook collectors. I don't know what other people do when they get a new cookbook, but I love to go through it from cover to cover, leaving post-it notes on recipes that interest me. There is something exciting about a new cookbook- maybe it's the possibility of something new. To be honest, I have lots of cookbooks, with lots of post-it notes, on lots of recipes I have never even tried, but I doubt that I am alone in this.

101 Things To Do With... intrigued me. I chose the slow cooker and the cake mix versions, from a long list of possibilities, for two reasons. First of all, I have re-discovered my crock-pot, which I used quite a bit in the 70s as a new bride. I love the idea of putting all the ingredients in a pot and coming home from work to the delicious aroma of a home cooked meal. The second reason for my choice was that my mother always seemed to have a cake mix in the house, for unforeseen company and I usually do too.

Both of these books are small and have a plastic overlay cover, to protect them from kitchen spills. Each one contains helpful hints for its particular recipes. For instance, I did not realize that I should be spraying the inside of my crock-pot with a non-stick cooking spray, before using it.

The cake mix book is broken down into sections on: brownies and bars, cookies, fruity cakes, fancy cakes, bundt cakes, muffins and breads and children's delights. I had no idea that so many things could be made out of an ordinary cake mix, to jazz it up.

The slow cooker book has chapters on; beverages, dips, fondues, soups, stews, beef, chicken, pork and desserts. I have at least a dozen post-it notes sticking out, which I am excited to try. The recipes seem easy and not filled with extravagant ingredients.

These books are inexpensive and would make great gifts for the new bride or for the cookbook collector.
