Captivity Narrative
by Mary Ann Samyn
Poems about captivity.
In “Captivity Narrative” Mary Ann Samyn takes the 17th century concept to a whole new level. The book is divided into six sections, called removes. The sections are an omen, the affliction, attempts are made, what holds gives way, there is a choice and the conclusion.
Stylistically the poems are set up decoratively on the page. Samyn weaves intricate webs into her poems. You have to guess a lot and they require deep thinking, but they are highly well written. The poems’ appearance mirrors their content. You get whipped around and jump from line to line, but when you look at the big picture it all makes sense.
There is an inner darkness in each of the pieces that readers connect with. The content is touching, mysterious and beautiful. This book is a wonderful one for those studying poetry or creative writing. The poems are advanced and take a lot to understand, but they are striking. I would recommend this book to anyone who shares a love of poetry.
