Dead Man Rising

by Lilith Saintcrow

The beginning of "Dead Man Rising" sprints in action as Dante Valentine chases down a vicious killer.

The pace never slows down in this intoxicating urban fantasy. Last March, “Working for the Devil,” the first book in the series deeply impressed me with its strong characterizations, plot, pacing and setting. The same high quality of writing makes “Dead Man Rising” an outstanding fantasy novel.

Working nonstop as a bounty hunter, Dante Valentine has spent the past six months trying to escape the memories of her failure to save a friend’s daughter and the death of the demon, Japhrimel. But soon she finds she must face even darker memories from her childhood. Someone is brutally murdering former students from Rigger Hall. Before Dante can solve this mystery, she must face her own nightmares of an abusive childhood spent at Rigger Hall.

While part of a series, this novel can stand alone. The character of Dante Valentine is complex and fascinating. She is a prickly bitch with a strong sense of honor. It is easy to understand the loyalty of her few friends. I strongly suspect legions of readers will soon be exhibiting the same type of loyalty to this series.
