Carolyn 101
by Carolyn Kepcher
To the faithful viewers of the show, The Apprentice, Carolyn Kepcher is one of Donald Trump’s fearless show advisors.
She is said to be the “straight shooter” of the show with her tell-it-like-it-is attitude, but in her book, “Carolyn 101” published in 2004 by Fireside, she becomes the professional mentor any woman in corporate America would love to have.
It is certainly her fame and her familiar face that lures you to pick up her book, however, it is its contents that captivates and keeps you reading from beginning to end. The book is a course on professionalism, business relationships, career development, and interviewing techniques and it even includes a section on how to have a successful balance between work and home, which is a very sensitive and important subject to all women in the workforce. In her book Carolyn uses examples and anecdotes from the show, from career experiences, before and during her employment at the Trump organization, and from her personal life, as a wife and mother of two, to demonstrate how success can be achieved with dedication, the right support system, professionalism, and good people skills.
Although the book may seem intended for women, men can also benefit from her advice since she covers non-gender related issues like: how to sell your skills when looking for your dream job. She even gives a list of resume, cover letter, interview, and pre-interview do’s and don’ts. Included are tips on how to work towards a promotion, how to ask for a well-deserved raise, and how to work through issues like team conflicts and bad bosses. The book is filled with helpful quotes like “A good employee is the master of his or her domain” and “When someone hands you an opportunity, don’t be afraid to take it," which emphasize the main points in each of the paragraphs.
It was such an interesting and enjoyable read, I would recommend it to anyone looking to begin or improve his or her career. This book can be used and shared as continuous reference for whenever career guidance is sought.
