Within the many immigrants that live in the United States, Asians are among the most academically talented or as Dr. Soo Kim Abboud and Jane Kim puts it in their book: “Top Of The Class”, published by The Penguin Group in 2005, “Asian students are considered amongst the best and the brightest in America.” The statistics found in the foreword of the book support that statement by saying that although Asian-Americans make up to only 4% of the U.S. population they make up to 20% of the student body at Ivy League universities.
Dr. Soo and Jane Kim say that their academic success is not due to how or where they were born but to how they were raised. Early in their childhood their parents, like many other Asian-American parents, focused on their educational growth and success by instilling a love for learning that they carried throughout their life. The book is a compilation of the values, habits, and cultural secrets they learned at home. Values like: instilling a love and need for learning, family pride and loyalty, defining a child’s role as a student, and developing your child’s individual talents. You will also learn their opinion on a how much or how little extracurricular activities a child should have and their opinion on promoting healthy competition, which is something many families try to avoid.
Top of the Class is a book I will use and recommend because all parents, in one way or another, are interested in their child’s success and future. The financial security that academic success can provide will not buy happiness, but it can secure a future where career, financial, and personal satisfaction can be achieved. The recommendations found in this book can help the parents who read it begin to lay the foundation to guide their child throughout their educational years to achieve this goal.
