Abadazad: The Road to Inconceivable - Book #1
by J.M. DeMatteis
Abadazad is a very unique and different type of book.
It is written in the style of a diary of a teenage girl, is illustrated in part like a comic book, and written in part like a comic book. But it doesn't read at all like a comic book. It is very interesting and gets your attention from the beginning. It is the story of a young girl whose parents are divorced, mother is a little crazy, father gone. And she is crazy about her little brother, who sticks with her throughout the trials of the story.
The basic thread of the story is that she writes things down in her diary, and the next time she opens it, other things are written or have appeared. She and her brother go on many magic adventures, and are never quite sure how these things get in her diary or become real. They both believe in the magic of the diary and the adventures they go on. She has a lot of faith in her brother's beliefs about the different things they see and do, that are otherwise impossible to explain or do, unless you do believe in magic.
Altogether, it makes a nice light read for ages 10 to adult, and surprisingly keeps the adult audience just as entertained as the children.
