Allergy and Asthma Cure, The
by Fred Pescatore, M.D.
You wheeze what you eat!
Dr. Fred Pescatore knows what he speaks of when he talks about an “allergy and asthma cure,” in his latest book since he used to suffer from asthma himself; but the “cure” he outlines, largely involving alleviating symptoms by modifying diet would seem difficult at best.
Still, his goal is an admirable one as he tries to help the countless people who have “ever had to get rid of a pet, stay indoors, or feel miserable for an entire season because of their allergies, or who suffer from asthma – a chronic and life threatening condition.”
Those who suffer, now more so than ever, would seem to be legion, with an astounding 30-40% of the North American population suffering from hay fever and allergies. Of those, Dr. Pescatore contends, 38% have also been diagnosed with asthma; while 78% of those suffering from asthma also suffer from allergies. “Not only do these two diseases co-exist,” he concludes, “they may even cause each other due to their underlying mechanisms.” Meanwhile, statistics show the death rate from asthma has doubled since 1980; and perhaps most disconcerting is the fact that a high proportion of those fatalities now involve children.
Pescatore aims to liberate those who suffer from their inhalers, antihistamines, steroids, and other medications since, oddly enough, their medications may be contributing to their condition. The culprit, he believes, is an abundance of a common organism found in the digestive tract, Candida albicans. Although it is meant to be present in the body, Pescatore suggests that taking too many courses of antibiotics – including oral steroid inhalants, a common asthma treatment – can over stimulate its growth.
The course of treatment the doctor outlines in his book, he says, has alleviated not only his own symptoms, but those of his patients, thereby eliminating the need for medication and its troubling side effects that include weight gain, jitters, and a “spaced-out” feeling compounded by difficulty in concentrating.
In a nutshell, Dr. Pescatore's program begins with proper nutrition, enhanced by nutritional supplements aimed at addressing symptoms, while ensuring the environment is free of contaminants.
The book includes in-depth explanations of what Dr. Pescatore, in his experience, suspects causes allergies and asthma and a list of possible triggers; but in the end, the prescription seems impractical. Mostly based on diet, the list of foods to avoid is an extensive one, eliminating everything except basic proteins like meat, fish, poultry and eggs; as well as vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds – and although recipes for accepted dishes are recommended, even these would seem to be bland and uninspiring.
