Pride and Prejudice
by Jane Austen
Jane Austen's timeless story of one of the most famous courtships in literature.
Some of Jane Austen’s best work, Pride and Prejudice is still enormously popular today. It is the love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, who must overcome their personal pride and prejudices before they may be together. Lizzy is the second of five daughters born to a country squire with no significant wealth. And as the first line of the novel states: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” With this fact in mind, Mr. Bennet must find suitable husbands for each of his five daughters, lest they be left in poverty upon his death. Four marriages take place within the novel, in varying degrees of satisfaction, with Lizzy and Mr. Darcy’s coming as close to perfection as a marriage might. The fun of the novel, however, is in getting to this happy ending. The courtship of Lizzy and Mr. Darcy is rocky, filled with clashes between two strong-willed people. But it is simultaneously sweet and funny as well.
Arguably Jane Austen’s finest novel, the text sparkles with wit, irony, romance, and charm. Nearly two hundred years old, it is still a joy to read, shimmering with love and humor. For anyone looking to take up Jane Austen’s works, this is the place to start.
