What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy

by James Paul Gee

Author James Paul Gee presents his unconventional position on video games: they're good for us.

James Paul Gee takes an unlikely stand on videogames in this book—he’s in favor of them. In this controversial book, Gee makes an impressive and persuasive case for what videogames have to offer in terms of learning and literacy. The book is essentially an elaboration on a set of thirty-six learning principles which he claims videogames provide to users. In direct opposition to the widely accepted claim that videogames are rotting the minds of today’s youth, Gee suggests that the learning experiences offered by gaming are valuable and possibly have a future in education. And though it would seem that a linguistics professor from the University of Wisconsin wouldn’t have a clue when it comes to videogames, Gee truly does know his stuff. He began playing his six-year-old son’s games in order to teach the boy how, and quickly expanded his gaming to such popular titles as Diablo 2, Halo, the Wolfenstein series, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, etc.

Gee presents his provocative argument in an accessible, comprehensive manner. The subject matter is fascinating, and the book is written in a fairly engaging style. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in what games have to offer kids today. And I would definitely suggest it to anyone who is still stuck on the idea that at best, videogames are a waste of time, and at worst, rotting the minds of today’s youth.
