Me Talk Pretty One Day
by David Sedaris
Warning: Do not read this in public; you won’t be able to contain yourself.
Reading David Sedaris’ Me Talk Pretty One Day, you would think it would be one of his first books, but instead it’s his fourth, leaving me to believe his wit and wealth of hysterical stories are never-ending.
If you couldn’t guess it from the title, Me Talk Pretty One Day is Sedaris’ take on communication. His laugh-out-loud narratives cover experiences from throughout his life, like his father’s love affair with his dog, his sister, Amy Sedaris’ (star of Comedy Central’s cancelled series Strangers with Candy) preference for fat suits and fake bruises, and the ignorance of American tourists, who he regretfully misses the chance to pickpocket. But behind all the humor, Sedaris reveals a great talent for understanding the underlying motives of those around him. And when you stop laughing, you might very well find yourself crying.
Me Talk Pretty One Day is just another of David Sedaris’ must-read works. Run, don’t walk to the bookstore and pick this one up.
