U2 Reader, The
by Hank Bordowitz
Interviews, reviews and articles about the noted Irish rock group.
U2, considered by many to be one of the great rock bands ever, has been performing its songs for more than a quarter of a century. The group, especially its charismatic lead singer Bono, has gained notoriety not only for their music, but for their connections with Christianity and outspokenness on politics. Considering U2's seriousness, we realize how far we've come from, “Let's twist again, like we did last summer.”
For The U2 Reader, editor Hank Bordowitz has gathered interviews, reviews and articles and arranged them in thematic chapters—e.g. “Rock Hunks,” “Spirituality,” “On Record,” and “On Screen.” Although the book is generally adulatory, the chapter “Experiments and Backlash” charts some of the band's ups and downs. Articles come from a wide variety of publications. Of course, there are pieces from Rock magazine and Melody Maker, but others come from sources ranging from Seventeen to the New Yorker, and from the Religion News Service to the Advocate. Among authors included here are Robert Christgau, Salman Rusdie, Andrew Sullivan and Janet Maslin. Readers will appreciate that the book's index lists references to individual albums, songs and tours. U2 fans, along with people interested in the band's cultural impact, will want to read this book.
