Curious what would happen if Anne Rice met Ozzie Osborne's family? The result would have to be a vampire romp through the angst of a less-than-stellar example of family life such as the Hugheses as they try to avoid discovery by their neighbors.
Tainted Blood reads like an Italian opera, what with Dad's old flame trying to tempt him while running from her undead ex-lover, who wants to do her in, and her young companion who outdoes Buffy as a vampire killer. Then there's sibling rivalry involving a wooden stake, fire, and an ancient sword, the toddler with an oedipal complex who hates his dad.
The reader may sympathize with the plight of the family children who can never grow up and who tire (after a few hundred years) of being treated like children, stuck in school and wearing kids' clothes when emotionally they're ready for sequins and romance. But each character is so flawed that his or her fate is well deserved.
This book does for the vampire genre what the TV show Hogan's Heroes did for World War II.
