Calling on Dragons

Book three of this series is told from Morwen's (the cleanly witch) point of view. Cimorene and Mendanbar have been married for about a year and Cimorene is pregnant. They must come together yet again to rally against the Society of Wizards. This time around, they've paired with traditionalist Arona Michealear Grinogion Vamist to make any nontraditional magical being miserable. Which is where Morwen comes in.

Morwen isn't your typical witch. She owns 9 cats, none of which are a proper black; she doesn't have warts, and is actually quite pretty; she refuses to lure and cook children; and, her garden has mundane items mixed in with the magical ones. She is the only person who can remember Vamist's full name, and usually attaches a sarcastic expression when mentioning it. He has called on the mirror, but only a few of her cats were there to answer it. Apparently, he said something offensive about felines and hung up. As Morwen is trying to wrest more information from her unwilling animals, another cat runs in with news of a giant rabbit caught in one of Morwen's bushes.

Murgatroyd, Fiddlesticks, Miss Eliza Tudor, Scorn, Jasmine, Trouble, Jasper Darlington Higgins IV, Chaos, and Aunt Ophelia accompany Morwen to the scene. After freeing Killer (honestly, rabbits come up with appalling names!), Morwen calls Telemain the magician for aid since Killer is indeed six-feet tall (7'11' counting the ears...). Although a couple of the cats are supposed to watch Killer, everyone becomes engrossed with a pint-sized wizard. After forcing him to talk, they melt him and go to the King and Queen of the Enchanted Forest for counsel.

By the time they reach the palace, King Mendanbar's sword has already been stolen. Because only a member of the Royal Family can hold the sword, and Mendanbar can't leave the kingdom while it's gone, Cimorene has to make the journey. She is accompanied by Kazul, Telemain, Morwen, Killer, Trouble and Scorn. The story is left hanging, with everyone stuck in a holding pattern. It is arguably the best book in the series for including the cats' banter, though.
