Angels & Demons

by Dan Brown

If you liked Da Vinci, you have to read this!

Many people put The Da Vinci Code on a pedestal, lauding its brilliance, heralding its research as truth, until finally Hollywood came a-knockin’ and made it official. The Da Vinci Code was a modern-day phenomenon. It delved into lore and history to create a story to resonate through the ages. But, it is not Dan Brown’s best work. It pales in comparison to the much more affluent Angels & Demons.

The story begins before The Da Vinci Code. Robert Langdon is called upon for his singular knowledge of symbols in a murder case. Priests that are in the top-tier of influence (next in line for the Papacy, because they’re popular), have been targeted by the Illuminati. The four most-popular priests are being murdered by the four elements. The first is discovered buried in earth up to his shoulders and suffocated. This death leads Langdon to the next body, killed by air, then fire and finally, water.

While posing as newlywed tourists in Italy, Langdon and Vittoria Vetra (his chosen Indiana Jones-like female acoutremont) force their way into the Vatican’s records. While there, they are nearly killed, and after finding “fire,” Langdon is trapped in a church and has to deal with his claustrophobia. Too late to save the priest exposed to fire, Robert and Vittoria focus on the last murder. They are behind the curve again, as Vittoria is kidnapped and Robert is forced to let the last priest succumb to water.

For anyone who liked The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons is a much better alternative. It takes place before Da Vinci, when Langdon is a much more pure and definitely-written character. His “love interest” is more mature and believable than Sophie and the case is less “needle in a haystack,” and more true drama/adventure. Forget Da Vinci, Angels & Demons is worth it, and twice as disturbing.
