Everything and the Moon
by Julia Quinn
When
Victoria Lyndon didn’t believe in love at first sight until she laid eyes on Robert Kemble. Her father had become the Vicar for the town abutting Robert’s family’s extensive estate. One day out by the river, Robert stumbled across Victoria waiting for a friend to come fishing. They hit it off almost immediately and didn’t care about the other’s place in the world. Unfortunately, Robert was to in line to become the Earl of Macclesfield. So, they kept their romance a secret by sneaking away during the day, and running wild over the land by night. They knew they could make it work, and that if they married over-the-anvil in Gretna Green, their families would adjust.
When Victoria’s father catches her sneaking out he ties her up. She is forced to stay in her room, because the Vicar is afraid that Robert will just ravish her and leave her ruined. All Robert sees when he comes for her is her asleep in her bed. Devastated, he returns home and tells his father of his plan. His father is outraged and believes that Victoria was only interested in Robert’s fortune. Since he can’t stand to stay, Robert takes off for London the very next day.
The second her father releases her, Victoria takes off for Robert’s, only to be verbally accosted by Robert’s father. The very next day, Victoria lists her services as a governess. Two weeks later she is gone also.
Seven years go by before the couple meets again. Robert is attending a house party given by Victoria’s overbearing employer. Robert cannot let go of the fact that Victoria would rather be a governess than happily ensconced as his mistress. He makes it impossible for her to keep a job so she takes off for London to become a seamstress; he follows.
Quinn is a jewel among Regency romance authors. Her characters never fail to entertain with biting wit, interesting quirks, and engaging stories. The only problem with her novels is that they seem to end too soon!
