Brighter Than The Sun
by Julia Quinn
Sometimes it takes a complete stranger to understand you better than family.
Eleanor Lyndon cannot any longer stand to live in her own home. She may not have liked her father after his harsh treatment of her sister, but they’d reached a kind of peace. She took care of the home, managed the tithes, and he left her alone. Then he’d gone and gotten engaged to the most fish-wifey, venomous woman in all of England – Mrs. Foxglove. Suddenly, nothing Eleanor did was good enough, and the hints about how she should have married and moved on were becoming less hints but obvious digs at Eleanor’s personality. Happily, Eleanor has a keen eye for investing. Unhappily, she is a woman, and not allowed to touch her own finances.
Charles Wycombe, Earl of Billington, must find a wife. He has until his 30th birthday to marry, or lose the fortune to an odious cousin while still having to manage the estate. Since that cursed event is less than a month away, Charles must marry soon. Happily, he has (quite literally) landed at Eleanor’s feet. Unhappily, he was (quite) drunk at the time. She helps him back home, where he proposes on the spot. Although she turns him down, she is interested in the offer – and in the man who made it.
After the wedding, it seems as if nothing can go right for the young couple. They enjoy their time spent together, but every time they are apart something awful happens. Eleanor decides to clean up the orangery, and for weeks the smell is horrible. She is poisoned by eating Charles’ dessert. When she fixes the oven, she sets the kitchen on fire. When she makes jam, it explodes and burns her hands and forearms. So, not only does the couple have to learn to get used to one another, they have to discover who is so determined to see them hurt or killed.
In the first book in this set, Eleanor’s character is so interesting, the reader gets excited to find out what’s next. In her own novel, Eleanor doesn’t disappoint. This one is better than the first!
