Little Women
by Louisa May Alcott
Four memorable sisters grow up during the Civil War.
Little Women is the story of the March girls: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. Jo is stubborn and hot-headed, Meg is vain, Beth is shy and Amy is selfish. They are poor, and for one Christmas decide that instead of buying each other gifts, they will buy presents for their mother, Marmee. Their father is serving as a Union chaplain in the Civil War. His letters home also inspires the sisters not to complain about their poverty. Marmee convinces her daughters to give away their Christmas breakfast to another poor family. When this is noticed by an elderly neighbor a feast is sent over along with an invitation to a New Year’s party. At the party Jo meets Laurie, a boy her age whom she befriends. After the holiday festivities end, the girls have various adventures. Amy gets into trouble at school, and after the teacher hits her as punishment Marmee withdraws her from school. Amy and Jo get into an argument, and Amy burns Jo’s manuscript. In retaliation Jo almost lets her drown while ice skating. While attending a party, Meg learns firsthand that appearances are not everything.
One day the March family receives a telegram reporting that Mr.March is sick and in the hospital. To help finance Marmee’s trip to visit him Jo cuts her hair and sells it. Beth visits the Hummels and catches scarlet fever from the baby who is sick with it.She becomes very ill and never fully recovers. The March sisters experience life, growing and learning all along the way.
Little Women was published in 1868 and written by the American author Louisa May Alcott. The tale is loosely based on Louisa’s own experiences growing up with her own three sisters. A female coming-of-age story of love, laughter, and heartache; the March sisters are unforgettable.
