Dance of the Gods
by Nora Roberts
Second in trilogy is alright, best serves as a connector between the first and the third
This book is the continuation of the war set in motion in Morrigan's Cross. Dance of the Gods tracks the team's training and preparation for the battle for worlds. In the first, the circle of six (the warrior, the one of many forms, the witch, the sorcerer, the scholar, and the one who is lost) was brought together by the goddess Morrigan to fight a vampire army amassed over centuries by the undead queen, Lilith. Also in the first, Glenna (the witch) and Hoyt (the sorcerer) came together as a couple over the first month. With only two months left before the battle in Morrigan's vision the circle has buckled down to train and study as much as possible before traversing to Geall.
About halfway into the second month of preparation the team makes the journey through the stone circle to the realm of Geall where their scholar is a queen and the shape-shifter a member of the royal family. Once there, they proceed to gather forces among the people of Geall and continue to ward off the ever-increasing vampiric threat. Dance of the Gods provides insight to the marriage between the Morrigan's Cross couple, Glenna and Hoyt, while tracking the budding romance (and increasing sexual tension) between Larkin (the shape-shifter) and Blair (the expert demon hunter/warrior). Larkin's knowledge of battle technique combined with Blair's demon-hunting family history (she is a descendant of Hoyt and Cian's younger sister) makes it certain that they'll be thrown together in a plethora of erotically-charged situations.
They think they have one another pegged. It's obvious that physical tension exists, but the emotional state of both characters is the wall between their development as a couple. Their emotions become the link (as opposed to the barrier) when one does something to surprise the other. For example, Larkin shape-shifts into a dragon and allows Blair to ride him through a sky filled with real dragons. Or, when Blair is readily accepted into Larkin's family. It's a good connector novel, but Larkin and Blair's romance seems prescribed and predictable.
