Anne of Green Gables

by L.M. Montgomery

You can't help but fall in love with the lively and extraordinary Anne Shirley.

Matthew and his sister, Marilla, live on their inherited farm, Green Gables, which is located in the small town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. The farm work becomes too much for sixty year-old Matthew to handle on his own. In a decision that raises controversy among the town gossips he and Marilla decide to adopt an orphan boy to help with the farm labor. But when Matthew arrives at the train station he is surprised to find eleven year-old Anne Shirley, the girl the orphanage sent by mistake. Her enthusiastic and charming nature eventually wins over Matthew and Marilla, who decide to keep her despite their initial hesitance.

Anne Shirley is a spunky red-headed girl, who is talkative and upbeat, even though she grew up as a deprived orphan. Anne has a wild fantasy life and lacks any sort of manners or social graces, and as a result, she often gets herself into trouble or simply makes mistakes. One particular instance involved her inviting her good friend Diana over for a tea party, but accidentally serving her red currant wine instead of the nonalcoholic raspberry cordial. When Diana returns home drunk, her mother, furious, forbids the girls to speak.

As Anne continues to grow up she slowly turns her attention from the adventurous to her education, and her efforts do not go unnoticed. She is accepted to a prestigious academy, earns a scholarship, and finally has enough money to attend a four-year college. But when her adoptive father Matthew dies, she must make a difficult decision that could change her entire future.

First published in 1908, "Anne of Green Gables" has been successfully adapted into film and television version in almost every decade between 1919 and present day. It is often considered a children’s book, but was originally intended to be, and has remained, a work of fiction for all ages.
