Sense and Sensibility
by Jane Austen
A tale about life and love in the open air.
Jane Austen's classic novel Sense and Sensibility is a beautiful work of art. The story takes place in the early years of the 19th century and stars the Dashwood family. The Dashwood family consists of Mrs. Dashwood and her three lively daughters Elinor, Marianne and Margaret. The father of this family dies in the beginning of the book, imploring his first son to take care of his half-sisters. Convinced by his less-than-kind wife to be less than generous with the girls, he forces the Dashwoods to move, taking over their home. Luckily the Dashwoods are offered residence in the cottage of a kindly relative.
While the two branches of the family are still at the Dashwoods' estate, Fanny's brother Edward comes to visit, catching Elinor's heart. A certain Colonel also falls under the spell of the romantic and beautiful Marianne, who experiences adventures of her own. Set in a seemingly calm and rural location, the story is enchanting. The story touches on many human truths while allowing the reader to experience Marianne's "sensibility" and Elinor's "sense." The story itself is on the different approaches to life and love that the Dashwood sisters experience. Although they look at life differently, they are both able to achieve their own complete happiness.
