Bridge to Terabithia
by Katherine Paterson
A fantasy kingdom and a beautiful frienship, both of which are truly unforgettable.
Jess Aarons’s dream is to be the fastest runner in the fifth grade. Eleven years old and one of five children, Jess also likes to draw and paint, but knowing that this makes him less masculine in the eyes of his father, he focuses solely on running. He practices every morning, always envisioning his victory, but when the real races take place at school recess, someone beats him. Leslie Burke, his bold new next door neighbor, defeats him and all the other boys. Her victory doesn’t stand in the way of their fast friendship, and together they build a secret fantasy world in the woods. They call it Terabithia, a place to escape from the rest of the world where they are the king and queen. There Jess and Leslie share secrets and dreams, strengthening not only their friendship but their selves. Back at school, though, they are often ridiculed for their cross-gendered friendship, which they bravely ignore. Their close relationship continues as they spend the holidays together, exchanging meaningful gifts and going to church. All is well until one fateful day that changes their lives forever. When Leslie drowns tragically in her attempt to reach Terabithia, Jess is devastated and fights to overcome his grief. He is only able to do this by finding the strength that Leslie instilled in him.
Bridge to Terabithia was first published in 1977 and won the Newberry Medal the following year. It was very recently and successfully adapted to film in February 2007. A book that can be equally appreciated by children and adults, Bridge to Terabithia will put a smile on you face and a lump in your throat.
