Facebook will soon be launching a new email messaging system that will challenge email giants Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail, according to the BBC News.

Dubbed “the Gmail Killer” by the technology Techcrunch blog, the social media company could unveil a full email operation, according to unconfirmed reports. It is also rumored that users may have their own @facebook.com email address.

Facebook boasts more than 500 million users globally. They will host a special event in San Francisco today releasing more details.

Google has decided to enhance Gmail with the implementation of Buzz.

To attempt to capitalize on the widespread popularity of various social networking features that are provided by Facebook, Google has introduced Buzz on Tuesday and launched it in approximately one percent of Gmail inboxes, according to The USA Today. Google has announced that they intend on launching Buzz to the majority of Gmail users throughout the remainder of the week. The implementation of Google Buzz into Gmail is being interpreted by many technological experts as a means to generate further interest in the company’s e-mail service.
