Jerry Lewis called back to host muscular dystrophy telethon

Back in May, legendary comedian Jerry Lewis announced that he would no longer be acting as the host of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day telethon, but in a stunning reversal, the MDA announced overnight that Lewis will be called back.

The reversal was stunning, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, because it was only two weeks ago that it was confirmed that he was not supposed to be hosting.

Jerry Lewis, a legendary entertainer and humanitarian who has served as the host of the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual Labor Day telethon for 45 years, has announced that he is retiring after this year’s event.

“As a labor of love, I’ve hosted the annual telethon since 1966, and I’ll be making my final appearance on the show this year by performing my signature song, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone,’” Lewis, 85, said in a statement issued on the MDA’s official website.

On Monday night, Larry King will host a two-hour celebrity telethon in an attempt to raise money for the oil spill in the Gullf. Entitled Disaster in the Gulf: How You Can Help, the broadcast will feature a multitude of celebrity appearances. Justin Bieber, Deepak Chopra, Cameron Diaz, Kathy Griffin, Lenny Kravitz, Tim McGraw, and Robert Redford are expected to attend. Sting will be performing, and Ryan Seacrest, a close friend of Larry King, will be interacting with online participants.

CNN and Larry King will host a celebrity telethon on Monday to raise relief funds for the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill.

Country Stars Unite to Help Flooded Music City

Some of the biggest names in country music came together at a telethon benefitting Nashville, TN.

Organized by Great American Country Television the telethon was able to raise $1.5 million to help Nashville recover from flooding earlier this month, according to ABC News.

Nearly 2,000 homes were damaged or destroyed during the flood, leaving around 2,600 people seeking temporary shelter. Damages are estimated at $1.5 billion and climbing.

Celebrities Help Relief Efforts in Tennessee

Several celebrities have been affected by the flooding in Tennessee, Kentucky and Mississippi. A telethon has been organized to raise money for the flood victims. The telethon, called Working 4 You: Flood Relief With Vince Gill & Friends, will air on May 6 at 7 pm on WSMV-TV Channel 4. Naomi Judd, Alison Krauss, Darius Rucker, Phil Vassar, and Bo Bice will make appearances at the fundraising event.

All Access Music Group reports that all proceeds will benefit the Salvation Army, the Red Cross and the Second Harvest Food Bank to assist relief efforts in Tennessee.

A Second Haiti Telethon Airing Tonight

Haiti still needs help. A second telethon, BET’s “SOS Saving Ourselves: Help for Haiti,” will continue to raise funds for relief efforts, MTV reports.

The telethon will be aired on BET, MTV, VH1 and Centric at 8 p.m. tonight.

Queen Latifah, Pharrell Williams and Diddy are co-hosting the event, with all funds going toward Haiti relief efforts such as C.A.R.E., Project MediShare, and Wycelf Jean’s Yele Haiti Foundation, per MTV.

With the disaster in Haiti, people all over are working to help those in need and Hollywood is no exception. The two hour telethon, Hope for Haiti Now premiered Friday night on multiple major channels worldwide. Hosted by George Clooney, Wyclef Jean, and Anderson Cooper with stars such as Brad Pitt, Beyonce, Rihanna and Bruce Springsteen showing their support by performing, over 24 million U.S. citizens watched the whole thing with 83 million total tuning in at various points with 5.8 million more watching online.

George Clooney will host Haiti Telethon

The Hollywood star plans to host a television aired telethon to help victims

As many people in Hollywood respond to the tragedy in Haiti, George Clooney pledges to do his part as well. While at a private event for his film Up in the Air last night, Clooney mentioned his plans to host a telethon with the proceeds going directly to earthquake aid.

The telethon will air on Friday January 22nd in an effort to support victims of the recent 7.0 earthquake in Haiti. It will air on MTV, ABC, NBC, HBO, and CNN from 8-10 p.m.
