Wyclef Jean Hit by Bullet Amidst Haiti Election Events

The singer was hit in the hand over the weekend in Haiti.

Most of the events surrounding the runoff presidential election in Haiti are going off without a hitch, but singer Wyclef Jean experienced a scare over the weekend when he was hit by a bullet in the hand while in Haiti. Luckily, the wound was superficial.

CNN reports that Jean was in Haiti helping to get votes for presidential candidate, Michel Martelly who is also a singer.

In a bizarre turn of events, hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean was visiting his homeland of Haiti on Saturday and was subsequently shot in the hand.

Jean was in Haiti for Sunday’s presidential runoff election, as he’s been supporting the presidential campaign of musician Michel Martelly. Martelly is pinned against former first lady Mirlande Manigat.

The former Fugees rapper told CNN that in Port-au-Prince Saturday night, before realizing he was “grazed by a bullet,” he heard "the sound of the boom."

The former Fugees rapper claims he heard "the sound of the boom" and then realized he was "grazed by a bullet," CNN reports.

Wyclef Jean was shot in the hand Saturday in his native country of Haiti.

"I have confirmed from Wyclef that he was immediately taken to the hospital, treated for a minor graze to his hand and released," his spokesperson told Us Magazinein a statement, adding, "He is fine."

Jean announced on Wednesday he supports his longtime friend and popular Kompa dance music star Michel “Sweet Micky” Martelly, according to ABC News.

The former Fugees front man had presidential aspirations of his own, but was forced to abandon his candidacy after electoral authorities ruled he did not meet residency requirements. Now he may provide the boost Martelly needs to defeat his opponent, 70-year-old former Haitian first lady Mirlande Manigat.
