Imelda Whelehan's 'The Feminist Bestseller: From Sex and the Single Girl to Sex and the City' Book Review

Author Imelda Whelehan traces the evolution of feminist writings from the academic to the iconic pop culture books of modern times. The writings may evolve but one thing is clear, that the introduction of the pill radically altered how men and women dated and mated, especially in major cities. The Feminist Bestseller is a synopsis and analysis of how feminist literature defined generations, segmented into sub-feminist themes, and continues to impact female sexual behavior.

Helen Gurley Brown's 'Sex and the Single Girl: Before There Was Sex in the City, There Was' Book Review

Before Candance Bushnell there was Cosmopolitan's legendary HGB.

Helen Gurley Brown was the original single girl in New York. She was well positioned too. The sexual evolution was her calling card and this book was the first modern guide to living life. HGB was to women what Hugh Hefner in the 1960s was to men. This book, groundbreaking as it was, paved the way for Candace Bushnell and her Sex and the City fame. Sex and the Single Girl is about being a modern woman seeking adventure and passion more than an MRS degree. HGB dished it out with advice on being sexy, enjoying the night life, and enjoying sex without fear of pregnancy.

John Kerr's 'A Dangerous Method: The Story of Jung, Freud, and Sabina Spielrein' Book Review

A woman almost lost to history or a hysteric?

A Dangerous Method is an interesting film but the book of the same title reveals much more of the complex triangle between Freud, Jung, and Spielrein. In fact, it delves much more into the history that was almost lost had it not been for discovered papers belonging to Spielrein. This is probably the most intriguing aspect of the story, that it was almost forgotten, and a woman’s role in the founding of psychoanalysis almost buried with her. There are some questions that one must ponder in reading this book. Was Spielrein inventing much of her affair with Jung?

'Home And Away' by Dave Bidini

When you think of the homeless, scenes of street-dwelling vagabonds pushing shopping carts full of aluminum cans, sleeping on benches with newspapers for blankets or holding their hands out for donations normally come to mind. You certainly wouldn't expect to see them in an airport on their way to Australia to take part in a worldwide soccer tournament. Yet, this is exactly what Canadian writer Dave Bidini chronicles in his book, Home And Away.

Random Family

A complicated look at people's way of life in the south Bronx.

Jessica, Coco, Mercedes, Boy George, and Cesar live fast and dangerous lives in the south Bronx. The boys begin dealing drugs at a young age and the girls drop out of school to care of their children, often before ever reaching high school.

Fearless Confessions

A new and vibrant view of what is and is not memoir.

The 'I' in memoir is a literary device to both enhance and explore complicated truths. Just as we are complex people in real life, we must be equally complex on the page - albeit artistically rendered.
