The Hits Collection Volume 1

Artist:
Jay-Z

When artists come out with a "Best of" collection it is usually a sign of their fading relevance, or a sign that they are going to break up. There are exceptions, of course. U2, Aerosmith, and other power groups had some success with hits albums and continued to create new music. Jay-Z falls into this latter group with The Hits Collection Volume 1.

The Greatest Hits

Artist:
Keith Green

Somewhere between Mandy Patinkin, Elton John and Josh Grobin, stands Keith Green. Two albums have been released in 2008, touting the best of Keith Green's live and recorded performances throughout his career. This particular album, The Greatest Hits, is a fun album with Green singing his heart out, and sharing some humor along the way. Pure '90s funky enthusiasm is oozing out of every pore, and yet Green's songs still come out crystal clear in their genuine care.

Daylight Kissing Night - Adam Marsland's Greatest Hits

Artist:
Adam Marsland

Before Daylight Kissing Night - Adam Marsland's Greatest Hits I had never heard of him. This is because for the past ten years he has been a mainstay in the underground indie music scene, touring and selling CDs without a label. However, this album shows that he has the talent and wit to be more than just an underground icon. The music is mostly indie with touches and hints of grunge and alternative. His songs are full of great melodies and harmonies, interesting riffs, and straightforward, funny, but not in the "lol" way, lyrics. These songs are quirky and clever.

Best of Edgar Meyer

Artist:
Edgar Meyer

Best of Edgar Meyer, from Edgar Meyer, is filled with tracks that exemplify this gifted instrumentalist's prowess. He was awarded a MacArthur Award in 2002 for his instrumental efficiency, which listeners will no doubt hear on this record. Meyer's expertise with his double bass will captivate listeners and draw them into each track's hypnotic spell.

"Early Morning" has sprightly piano work that is sharply contrasted by Meyer's deep double bass play. The rhythm of the song mimics how one feels when they awaken at a day's first light.

Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr's "Photograph: The Very Best of Ringo Starr" is an album that will delight his longtime fans and possibly corral him some new ones. The record contains seven top 10 hits that were released between 1975 and 2005, but all the tracks exemplify the 64-year-old Starr's signature sound and vibe.

The title track was originally released by Starr in October 1973. It reached No. 1 in the United Kingdom and the U.S. singles charts and was written by Starr and fellow Beatle, the late George Harrison.

Best of Frank Black

Artist:
Frank Black

Frank Black's "Best of Frank Black '93-'03" is an anthology of his greatest solo triumphs. The Pixies' front-man has a high-strung voice that at times croons lyrics of double or mixed messages that will delight his staunch fans, but that might discombobulate others.

"Los Angeles" has easygoing guitar work in the intro as Black talks about people he has met in the "City of Angels." He nimbly emotes lines like, "I met a man.
