Field Trip

Artist:
Recess Monkey

A couple days ago, I had to make a 45-minute drive to the doctors for my sister. I was not to please with this arrangement.

I love my sister, but I can never get her to stop complaining about every little thing in the car. To counter this problem, I decided to download the Recess Monkey new album, "Field Trip," onto my MP3 player. Thank you, Recess Monkey.

Their album is pretty a much guaranteed to be a sensation for children everywhere.

Beautiful World from Dog On Fleas is a quirky and fun CD full of whimsical twists and turns that are sure to make you smile.

From the start, the opening title track sets the mood and lets you know that this will not be your run-of-the-mill listening experience. With some terrific harmonies and lyrics such as "God goes clamming and brings up a pearl," the song "Beautiful World" is a charmer through and through.

Moo Juice

Artist:
Funky Mama

This is too delicious. Funky Mama's album is an adorable compilation of catchy and friendly songs for kids. The songs have clean and fun lyrics, and some are surprisingly catchy, the type of tunes one could just as easily see being played in an upscale establishment. One of the best of these songs is "Sippy." Funky Mama has a great and strong, powerful voice, which she uses to great effect. Parents and kids alike can enjoy this child-friendly compilation of songs geared towards teaching children positive messages, such as pride in oneself, and drinking milk.

Postcards from My Mind

Artist:
Little Maestros

Little Maestros' third album, Postcards from My Mind, sets itself apart from other children's CDs in having all its tracks connected together in a story line. The story here is about a 5-year-old girl named Sparkle and her talking stuffed animal, Scratch, imagining themselves on vacation at Maestroville's Hotel Parazone on Maestro Beach. In order to establish and further the story, some of the 28 tracks on the album are short pieces of spoken dialogue.

Dream

Artist:
Mae Robertson

Mae Robertson's warm, soothing voice singing traditional lullabies like "Golden Slumbers," "Hush, Little Baby" and "Winken, Blinken and Nod" makes Dream a good album to listen to when trying to get your little ones to fall asleep. Dream is also an album for adults as well, as Robertson's covers of Bob Dylan's "Forever Young," Paul Simon's "St. Judy's Comet," James Taylor's "You Can Close Your Eyes" and Tom Waits's "Midnight Lullaby" will remind older listeners of the music of their youth.

Shakin' in Chicago

Artist:
Thaddeus Rex

Some of the songs on Thaddeus Rex's latest album, Shakin' in Chicago, pay tribute to the city the Illinois-born but Indiana-raised children's performer is now based in.

Rex's upbeat vocals, lyrics and use of children's voices in some songs help signify him as a children's performer. One song has him asking where he can find green eggs and ham, that strange food combination from the Dr. Seuss book.

Special Kind of Day

Artist:
Rebecca Frezza and Big Truck

Rebecca Frezza and her band Big Truck's album, Special Kind of Day, is a CD the whole family can listen to and enjoy. Though the lyrics are more for children...the opening song, "Come On Out," celebrating the arrival of spring, addresses different animals as Mr. Hedgehog, Mr. Mouse and so on...older listeners can get caught up in the band's music, which employs a variety of instruments and is complex enough to capture the listener's interest. The album's 13 songs take you through the seasons of the year.

Very Derryberry

Artist:
Debi Derryberry

Debi Derryberry has released a brand new collection of children's songs entitled Very Derryberry that is sure to keep your children entertained for hours on end. Tunes such as "I Love to Share" and "Tonsil Song" will delight and educate your toddler, and may even bring a smile to your face for all of its whimsical delight. My four-year-old's favorite on the CD was the Hebrew song, "Kum Bachur Atzel (The Rooster)," due to the bouncy tempo. I highly recommend this CD for those with children who love music.

All The Colors

Artist:
Ira Marlowe

Well, I guess the measure of a children's album's artistry is the effect it has on children. So, I played Ira Marlowe's "All The Colors" album for my three year old, and she absolutely loved it. Her biggest response came from the song "The Ballad Of Pepe Pinto," with it's Spanish flavored tuba and Caribbean accented steel drums. My favorite, however was "Molly the Moose in Hollywood," where it seems that even moose have morals.

This is a good CD for kids and adults to sing along and ride along to. Don't be surprised if you find yourself listening to these without your children around.
