Tom Wopat's 'Consider it Swung' Album Review

Artist:
Tom Wopat

Tom Wopat’s Consider it Swung is an intriguing mix of classic songs with a jazzy, soulful twist. It offers a cool, relaxing vibe that takes the listener back in time, much like the music of Michael Buble. Full of intelligent lyrics and emotion-filled delivery, ‘Swung’ is a plausible effort from the former TV star.

Jocelyn Medina's 'We Are Water' album review [VIDEO]

Jocelyn Medina

Jocelyn Medina’s album, We Are Water, is a culmination of international sounds and genres. The music is soulful, funky, compelling, and rich.

Medina studied opera at Stanford University, which explains how rich her voice is and her ability to control it to paint lyrical pictures for her listener’s to imagine. Growing up surrounded by music, it is no surprise that Medina knows how to make music addictive and how to compel her listeners to keep their headphones on and the volume turned up.

Gary Smulyan’s 'Smul’s Paradise'

Artist:
Gary Smulyan

Baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan’s debut recording, entitled Smul’s Paradise, which will be released by Capri Records on Jan. 17, is a tribute to the classic jazz organ trio format. The album has Smulyan on baritone sax, Kenny Washington on drums, Mike LeDonna on the organ and Peter Bernstein on guitar. Three of the eight tracks on the album are an homage to organ great Don Patterson while two of the tracks were originally penned by Smulyan. In addition, Smulyan is among the first baritone players to front such a group.

Ray Brown's Great Big Band 'Kayak' review [VIDEO]

Artist:
Ray Brown's Great Big Band

Ray Brown’s Great Big Band has an utterly smooth, uncomplicated jazz album underneath its musical belt. How could anyone expect anything less from Ray Brown’s band? After all, the entire band was hand-picked by Ray Brown for their outstanding musical abilities.

Ray Brown, who wrote music for artists such as Count Basie, wanted his writings to finally give him some sort of recognition, hence the start of his “great big band.” Let us just say that it is pretty great. Now, the album I am so crazily praising is Kayak, a wonderfully masterful compilation of Brown’s own arrangements.

Decades ago, The Jeff Lorber Fusion pioneered the smooth jazz genre. Now, the band returns to the niche they helped popularize with their much-anticipated release, Galaxy.

The album features 11 original tracks. This includes new arrangements for four of Lorber’s most-requested compositions, “The Underground,” “The Samba,” “City” and “Wizard Island,” the latter which launched the career of the one and only Kenny G.

Danielle Reich: This Year's Kisses review

Artist:
Danielle Reich
Warm, friendly jazz album that shows creativity without straying too far from what makes the source material strong.

On her new album, This Year's Kisses, vocalist Danielle Reich displays diverse influence, but it's the consistently displayed qualities that make it a winning effort.

From the opener, "On the Street Where You Live," I was struck by how Danielle stays faithful to melodies without delivering them the exact same way each time, and how instead of laying a lot of inflection on words or emoting more than necessary, she communicates just enough of the emotion of the lyrics while letting her friendly tone be the most prominent element of her delivery.

Unstrained, clear, distinguished, Paula Lammers’s voice soars above the relaxing jazz instrumentals on her album Deep Purple Dreams. Her voice is delicate but dominate, calm and controlled.
