The E. Family - ‘Now and Forever’

Artist:
The E. Family

Drummer Shelia E. is best known for her work with Prince and touring with Ringo Starr, but she’s also had success with hits like “The Glamorous Life.” The Escovedo family is filled with musical talent, though. Shelia recently got together with her father, Pete and brothers Juan and Peter Michael to record Now and Forever, a great album with a unique twist of Latin beats and pop.

Album review: 'Alma Vieja' by Russ Hewitt [AUDIO]

Artist:
Russ Hewitt

Released this year, Russ Hewitt’s Latin American influenced album, Alma Vieja, or “old soul” in English, made my old soul want to crumble- and not in a good way.

As much as I appreciate culturally influenced works, this anything but bearable album that mixes the sounds of Rhumba with Flamenco and Jazz is not even close to becoming a hit. There are several things I would rather listen to: elevator music, my mother ranting about laundry to do, and a monkey giving birth.

A beautiful musical journey

Artist:
Elspeth Savani

Elspeth Savani’s sophomore release, Flights of Mind, takes the listener on a beautiful musical journey with its fusion of Latin, jazz, and pop music.

Tracks such as “No Volvere” bring you to a small smoky club where the men and women dance the Tango until dawn. “Snow Language,” in which Savani sings in both English and Spanish, will remind listeners of Joni Mitchell’s catalogue from her jazz-fusion period during the mid-'70s. “Isla,” perhaps Savani’s most musically ambitious track, flies you to an island fiesta without getting on a plane.

No need to blame Quartet for the Bosa Nova

Artist:
Duda Lucena Quartet
'Duda Lucena Quartet Live' is as intimate as its music.

I fell in love with Brazil’s Bosa Nova sound after listening to the recordings of artists such as Sergio Mendes and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

The Duda Lucena Quartet perfectly carries Bosa’s torch for a new generation of listeners with their live recording. Two gorgeous covers kick off the show with Joao Donatos’s “Lugar Comum” and Jobim’s “Corcovado.” The Brazilian born Lucena’s vocal style is similar to Jobim, but he one-ups Jobim when it comes to clarity and tone.

'Dirty Dancer' Single: Review

Artist:
Enrique Iglesias
Hey, everyone! Enrique doesn't sound like a creep in this song!

Enrique Iglesias began his career singing Latin love ballads in the 1990s, but transitioned to the American pop market because he didn’t have enough of a public image to be pidgeon-holed into his first genre. His most recent single, “Dirty Dancer,” is of his typical blandness. It’s a dance song that will sound good while it lasts on the charts, but offers nothing innovative and will be forgotten after it drops off.

P.A.R.C.E.

Artist:
Juanes

With each album Colombian superstar Juanes has gotten better and better. It was only a matter of time until he hit a plateau and P.A.R.C.E. is it.

Not that the album is bad. On the contrary, it is quite good and is a solid example of Juanes's progression as a musician. He's unfraid to tackle heartfelt themes and deep groovy sounds, and this is possibly his most mature work yet.

But for all its appearance, P.A.R.C.E. lacks soul. There's not one track that stands out as its "A Dios le Pido", no "Camisa Negra", no "Volverte a Ver".

Tango

Artist:
Vayo

The Latin artist known as Vayo is releasing his new album, "Tango." Vayo Raimondo is one of a few artists of tango music that happens to write his own music. "Tango" is a blend of different genres such as Latin, classical, and world.

Starting off the album, "La Cumparsita" is a melodramatic ballad with Vayo's dark and mysterious vocals. His deep vocals sound uncanny at first, but after awhile his voice grows on you. "La Cumparsita" is sung in Spanish like the rest of the tracks.

A Gozar!

Artist:
Cecilia Noel

Cecilia Noel's new album, "A Gozar!" is the definition of salsa at its best. Her sound is full of fire and passion. She combines Latin, jazz, salsa and even soul to create an album that is easy "to enjoy!"

The loud trumpets in the background forecast an album that is going to be full of fun. "Everybody's Mambo" has a salsa vibe that calls for dancing.

"Living on the Run (A La Carrera)" and "Candela" beg you to do the salsa and dance cheek-to-cheek with someone. The music is enlightening and the way Cecilia Noel sings is exotic.

Samba to Go

Artist:
Hendrik Meurkens

Hendrik Meurkens's Samba to Go is full of ups and downs, and leaves listeners a bit confused as to his point of view and message on this recording.

Tracks such as "Odessa in April" feature some quality harmonica work while the title track, "Samba to Go," is a fast?paced, rollicking tune that bounces along happily. "Mountain Drive," conversely, slows the pace and is lovely ? especially the opening sequence, which is dream-like. "Bossa Sketch" keeps it simple, which is a welcome bit of variety. But "My Foolish Heart" is the best number here ?
