Amos Lee: Mission Bell review

Artist:
Amos Lee
Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter safely delivers again.

Singer-songwriter Amos Lee's fourth album was produced by Calexico's Joey Burns, and the results are nice enough.

Nothing on Mission Bell is likely to surprise those familiar with Lee's previous albums; his singing is still soulful, every song flows smoothly (detractors would say "unfolds predictably"), and the overall sound can be described as "mainstream coffee shop" (Starbucks, specifically).

Mellow is the word I'd use to describe the whole thing if I had to pick just one word, but luckily, I can expand and get into specifics.

'And the Boys' EP: Review

Artist:
Angus and Julia Stone

Angus and Julia Stone are a brother-sister musical duo. Their debut album reached No. 1 in their native country of Australia, and their songs tend to be gentle, sweet, and beautifully written.

Their EP, And the Boys, is no exception. All four of the songs on the track are primarily composed of soft guitar with keyboard and percussion backings. Julia provides the main vocals, with Angus occasionally harmonizing; her voice does not show much volume on this EP, but it’s well-pitched and pretty.

Heartstrings

Artist:
Suzie Brown

Ever since she started writing songs two years ago, Suzie Brown has taken the music industry by storm. She has sold out popular venues such as Boston’s Club Passim and Philadelphia’s Tin Angel. She has also opened for Livingston Taylor and Lyle Lovett. Now she is set to release her sophomore album, titled Heartstrings.

Brown is a practicing cardiologist who recently gave up her research to follow her music career. Good thing for us she went for her dream because this music really hits the spot.

I'm Not Sorry

Artist:
Abby Bernstein

New York based singer/songwriter Abby Bernstein introduces a youthful and yet mature voice on her debut music release.

Sara Ramirez - EP

Artist:
Sara Ramirez
This actress demonstrates her singing abilities in four songs on her EP.

For those of you who are unaware of the fact that Sara Ramirez is a singer who has showcased her voice on Broadway, this becomes incredibly clear in her recently released EP. This album features only four songs, but all of them demonstrate the power of Ramirez’s voice. Her singing was also recently featured on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy when her character, Callie Torres, suffered horrific injuries in a car accident. The release of this EP was just days before the episode aired.

'Big Black Hole and the Little Baby Star'

Artist:
Sean Hayes

Sean Hayes has the kind of voice and airy tunes that will make you want to sing out loud despite the fact that your voice makes small children cringe… well, maybe it’s just my terrible voice that makes small children run, but regardless, artists like Sean Hayes make me remember why I love listening to music.

His CD, Big Black Hole and the Little Baby Star has a great sound. If acoustic, groovy, and airy could have a baby, it would be this CD. It’s the sort of CD that will make you feel reminiscent and nostalgic about nothing in particular.

'The Great Escape EP' and 'We've Got to Find an Easier Way'

Artist:
Brian Bergeron

Hating my life as a freshman at Boston College, I used to spend a significant amount of time meandering through the freezing cold city avoiding actually attending class before I decided to transfer to a warmer locale.

However, if going to school in Boston offered me one thing, it is this- Brian Bergeron. In one of my trips through the city, I followed the heavenly acoustics and romantic voice that I heard from a distance only to find myself standing in front of an adorable guitar player selling his CDs on the street corner.

The Best of Neil Diamond

Artist:
Neil Diamond

The Best of Neil Diamond is a complete look at the former Brill Building songwriter from Brooklyn.

"Cracklin' Rosie" is a welcoming, opening upbeat song. The next song, "I Am . . . I Said" is a beautifully arranged, bittersweet melody. Its string sections and acoustic guitar complete it nicely. Diamond's near operatic vocal tone was passionate and confident. His songs exist as simple melodies made into deep echoing arrangements giving each song the fullness it presents itself with.

Under the Pink

Artist:
Tori Amos

Tori Amos emerged in the '90s as part of a movement of female singer/songwriters, one who wrote very personal, typically confessional lyrics. Quickly she rose to prominence in that field, and when we listen to her debut album, "Under the Pink," we can certainly hear why. She possesses many talents that are evident here. Her piano playing is widely ranged, and she can play anything from pieces more classically arranged to jazz and rock.

Flawz

Artist:
Caitlin Crosby

Here's something you don't see everyday in Hollywood - a blonde haired gal, with a conscience who sings about embracing her flaws.

Caitlin Crosby is a 24-year-old singer/songwriter who grew up in L.A. and around the entertainment industry. She's seen a thing or two and she's not afraid to address the issues that face her generation.

Her debut album, simply entitled "Flawz," is infused with opulent pop/rock beats, thought provoking lyrics and her signature raspy voice.

Crosby sings with grit, and conviction - and she's not apologizing to anyone for it.
