Rachel Portman delivers in 'Snow Flower' film score

Artist:
Rachel Portman
'Snow Flower and the Secret Fan' is among composer Portman's finest work.

The wonderful thing about soundtracks is that, when done right, they tell the film’s story entirely through music. The score for Snow Flower and the Secret Fan does just that, and ranks among Academy Award-winning composer Rachel Portman’s best work— Emma in 1995, Chocolat in 2000 and The Joy Luck Club in 1993.

Carmen: Music for the 1926 Silent Film

Artist:
Ernesto Halffter

If you aren't familiar with the illustrious career of Ernesto Halffter, it all began with his scoring of the movie, Carmen, in 1926, at the age of 21. The movie was a silent film, and therefore he and the orchestra were the voices of the movie that helped progress the plot from scene to scene. The titles of the individual tracks allude to the pacing of the tunes, and vary depending on the scene they portray. Almost all of the tracks build up near the end of their run time, to predate the scene change.

'The Rum Diary' serves up the perfect cocktail

The Rum Diary - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

The film adaptation of Hunter S Thompson's tale of unabashed hedonism on the island of Puerto Rico, The Rum Diary was not, one might say, a box office triumph or even an indie success in terms of critic reviews, despite the seemingly perfect formula for an excellent film. This can be blamed on poor scripting and casting selections or the fact that any Hunter S epic following Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was doomed to fail, the bar being set too high for any film following to launch itself over.

Bruno Mars: 'It Will Rain'

Artist:
Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars is known for his intense love songs and catchy melodies, so it comes as no surprise that Bruno Mars's single, “It Will Rain,” is the lead off single for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 soundtrack. Mars recently released a music video to “It Will Rain.” Phil Pinto and Mars directed the music video.

'I Don't Know How She Does It' Soundtrack

Artist:

Although the recently released film, “I Don’t Know How She Does It,” starring Sarah Jessica Parker, may be far from a classic (a virtual flop upon its Sept. 15 release), its accompanying soundtrack went to the classics to create the movie’s backdrop. The movie, based on Allison Pearson’s novel of the same name, follows Kate Reddy (Parker) as she attempts to juggle a full-time job along with being a mother and wife.

'Rise Above 1' Single: Review

Artist:
Reeve Carney
I really don't think this is Spider-Man.

The Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark musical has been a critical failure (though a financial success) from its first previews. One can blame the convoluted story line or the heavy amount of injuries different actors have sustained even before the official opening, but the most damning thing for Turn Off the Dark is that it's a musical that has bad music. Not every song on Broadway can be “We Are What We Are” or “I Am What I Am” from La Cage Aux Folles, but how could music composed by U2’s Bono sound so…ordinary?

Scream 4 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

What would Ghostface listen to while preying on his victims?

If anyone thought that horror films were just filled with ominous and campy music, well, they haven’t heard the Scream 4 soundtrack. Scattered with punk music and different genres of rock influences, the soundtrack is not taken as a medium to promote the newest Avril Lavigne song.

For a movie franchise that propelled a new generation of horror flicks by poking fun at you-deserved-it type deaths, it is no surprise that its eclectic track list is a fun supplement to the film.

Hop [Soundtrack]

This movie and its soundtrack get audiences in the mood for Easter.

The recently released film, Hop, tells the story about an Easter Bunny who’s reluctant to fulfill his duties. He attempts to follow a different path and gets involved with many different adventures. The music from this film conveys many of the different things that the bunny gets involved with, and it also gives off a very magical feel since the topics deal with the magic of Easter.

Grey’s Anatomy: The Music Event [Soundtrack]

Some of the memorable songs of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ were sung by cast members on a recent episode.

I’ll be the first to admit that when I heard that Grey’s Anatomy was doing a “musical event” with some of the most memorable and influential songs of past episodes, I was a bit skeptical. However, this episode of the hit medical drama was definitely a surprise for the good, and the soundtrack, which features nine songs, is also a hit.
