Alabama

Birmingham

Adventure way beyond the Hudson

In the heat of summer, New Yorkers escape to the beaches of the Hamptons, the Jersey Shore or Florida, but being married to a history buff, Alabama had been long on his list of states to visit.

The city of Birmingham shows a radical mix of progress. As we drove in the 90-degree-plus weather, we saw a half-dozen soaring modern skyscrapers mixed among a barrage of abandoned or neglected store fronts.

Point Clear

A special spot for weary spirits... since 1847

We drove a few hours south of Montgomery, Alabama and suddenly water appeared. We were just a little southeast of Mobile outside of Point Clear on Mobile Bay, Alabama and the view of The Grand Hotel Marriott Resort, Golf Club & Spa was a welcome sight after driving on the highway. The hotel, indeed, lives up to its name; sitting majestically overlooking Mobile Bay.

We checked in and, happily, found that two sides of our suite had a panoramic view of the water, but we had no time to enjoy that now, for we would be off on a sunset sailing adventure on the Joshua.

Montgomery

Where fire tempered the steel

We found our way to a spot on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail: The Legends at Capital Hill overlooking the Senator Golf Course. It was roughly a three-hour ride from Birmingham to Montgomery and we were happy to relax and unwind a little. This hotel was a little on the quiet side, but as we soon discovered August is not the high season for golf.

We looked forward to relaxing and enjoying dinner in the Magnolia Room, overlooking the golf course.

Gulf Shores

Why hasn't anybody heard of Gulf Shores yet?

Within the circle of what most people would consider driving distance to Gulf Shores, Alabama, everybody has heard of Gulf Shores. Within this circle, Gulf Shores is revered, respected and loved. Outside of this "driving distance" circle, when people think of Gulf Shores they simply think about Alabama's shores; the Gulf Shores part is lost. Being from outside the circle, I was in the category with those that have never heard of Gulf Shores. I'm going to break literary notion and tell you something about the end of the story because I feel it will get the point across.

Mobile

Pushing aside rumours about Mobile, Alabama Dominick gets to the truth of what's fun and exciting to do there.

It was the six-year anniversary of our first date. Love was in the air, and romance was all around. We could have gone to Paris, San Francisco, or Rome. Yes, you can go to those cities, but nothing, nothing tops Mobile, Alabama for romance. Nothing tops the deep south. Yes, you can have your fine wine in Paris, but can you get fresh oysters? Sure, San Francisco will have it's beautiful Bay, but does it have Mobile Bay? And Rome has those cannolis, but Mobile has pecan pie.

Unfortunately, Mobile has an unpopular reputation.
