Mohegan Sun

We learned that gaming is only part of the Mohegan Sun Experience. They offer little bit of their heritage and history with the welcoming attitude of Uncas.

I hadn't been to The Mohegan Sun in about 10 years and when my husband and I recently returned, I was so pleasantly surprised at all the updates and additions. As we entered the lobby, decorated with birch trees made to resemble the inside of a Native American basket, the surroundings were not at all what I remembered. The first part of the casino was built in 1996. In 2000, the casino underwent a massive expansion and in 2002, the hotel was built. No wonder nothing seemed familiar.

Brooklyn

Having been that long-time Brooklyn, New York resident, I fully comprehend and appreciate the weight behind the name - Brooklyn. So it was with great anticipation that I looked forward to discovering another town named, Brooklyn. To be honest, I grew up thinking that there were no other Brooklyns and to give more information than the name of my borough, was unnecessary.

Mohegan Sun

An escapist holiday in a casino/resort, simply to get away from it all.

The Mohegan Sun Hotel and Casino is part nature and part modern complex. The structure sits alongside the river. Given its gargantuan size and based on the surrounding environs, you'd find it more appropriate for a log cabin to be sitting there. Instead, it looks like large blocks of granite and crystal has arisen from the ground in some cataclysmic global upheaval. The hotel is massive, truly massive but sitting in a sweet pasture as the river gently flows by.

My wife Margherita and I had driven up on I-95 from New York to basically the end of Connecticut.

A Tale of Two Lodgings

Choices, choices, choices! Aren't we lucky that in our world of multi-options, we as travelers have so many more choices than in years passed. The travel industry has broadened to include something for everyone. Recently, while touring Connecticut, we had the opportunity to experience two distinct accommodations, both of which, were wonderful and worth the trip.

About 10 minutes from the lure of slot machines at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, is a Bed and Breakfast (B&B) vaguely reminiscent of the cottage of the Seven Dwarfs.

Mystic

Nestled along a river in Connecticut is the small, but quaint

Our latest travel destination was to explore Mystic. In preparing for our trip, my husband, Donald and I checked our maps. To our surprise, we discovered that Mystic is neither a city, nor a town -- as one of our guides explained: "Mystic is a state of mind." One side of the Mystic River is the town of Groton, and the other is Stonington, but somehow the entire area is known as Mystic. We further learned that Mystic has its own zip code, fire district and historical district.

Well, with that mystery unsolved, we began the estimated 3-hour car ride from the New York Area.

Essex County

Besides getting used to staying in a bed and breakfast our writers go on a three hour tour to see bald eagles in Connecticut.

All right so now I get it. Now I get what all the fuss is about. As my friends used to gush over their wonderful weekends in Bed & Breakfasts, I was clueless. I hesitate to admit this, but my husband and I had never been to a B&B before. Frankly, I didn't get the attraction in staying in someone's house. I opted for all of the amenities of a big hotel. Well now I can finally say, "I get IT".

New Haven

Not just a highway sign but the first hamburger, the first pizza and great museums.

To understand New Haven is to understand the highways. Whenever you drive from New York to Boston, or visa versa the mid way point which all of the highway signs point to is New Haven. The entire time you're thinking, "Man, this New Haven, must be good, all the signs point here". Then you drive past New Haven and you feel a bit disappointed. You see a factory and a not so pretty seashore...

Then you actually realize that you were looking the wrong direction the whole time and you feel rather stupid.
