Cirque du Soleil’s acrobatic rock opera, Zarkana, premiered at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 29.

Ocean Grove

We inevitably got stuck in traffic, trying to leave the congested perimeters of New York City for a quiet overnighter in the Garden State. We purposely left early on a Friday, hoping to avoid the throngs of escapees, but an accident up ahead left us scrambling through city streets on a detour. This is never a great way to begin a getaway.

In a few hours we entered Ocean Grove, New Jersey and found ourselves driving down streets of vintage Victorian homes in search of The Manchester Inn.

Manchester Inn

Don and Jan discover a Murder Mystery Dinner at a Bed and Breakfast in New Jersey.

The Manchester Inn is really a fully-operating hotel nestled among the many Victorian homes. It is only one block from the ocean and is four stories high with outdoor porches, each affording an ocean view. In fact, all the homes built within two blocks of the ocean have an ocean view, due to each home having a different front "set back" from the street, than the one next to it. The effect is that the street appears to get wider the closer to the beach you are. This allowed each next-door neighbor to have an ocean view and a cool breeze during the hot summers.

New York City

Janet revisits her New York City roots from the perspective of a tourist.

Even though I've lived in suburban Long Island for five years, when asked, "Where are you from?" I still automatically say, "Brooklyn!" After being raised in the best New York City borough - Brooklyn, Manhattan was no stranger to me. Growing up, we made periodic treks into Manhattan, particularly to Radio City for the Holiday show. Sometimes we visited my uncle, who had what seemed to me to be a glamorous life in the entertainment industry.

North Fork

Janet explores the gardens, B&B and vineyards of Long Island's famous North Fork.

You know how a certain place, food, color or song reminds you of someone you know or knew. Well when I see cobalt blue, I think of my friend Nancy. When I hear about the "Brooklyn Cyclones", my friend Elvira comes to mind. So with that obtuse train of thought in mind, our last travel adventure was an "Emma and Jack" vacation. My dear friend Emma loves to explore new Bed and Breakfasts and Jack likes to "hunt" for a new wine to taste. Our recent excursion to North Fork, Long Island, highlighted those two interests perfectly. Thus, this is a great "Emma & Jack" trip.

Villa Roma

A family run resort in the catskills that still has that family run intimacy even after decades of growth.

I mentioned to my Mom that I was going to Villa Roma for a few days, and she commented, "My Senior club went there a few years ago and they all said it was very nice." Evidently, seniors can go there, so they must have bingo and the compliment, "It was very nice," meant it must have good food.

That was all I knew about Villa Roma...until my trip changed everything.

All of my preconceived notions of a nice little Catskills Resorts were shattered as we drove onto Villa Roma's grounds. It was huge.

For a relaxing weekend getaway with wineries, shopping, nightlife entertainment, and even a medieval festival, try Orange County, New York!

For a relaxing weekend getaway with wineries, shopping, nightlife entertainment, and even a medieval festival, try Orange County, New York!

When you need to get away... Orange County, New York is the place! We were looking for a weekend get away from the routine workweek, and we found it on this trip.

After a quick 2-hour drive, we started our weekend off at the Brotherhood Winery. Brotherhood is the oldest winery in America. The Brotherhood Winery feels more like a museum than your average small winery.

Buffalo

Dominick discovers all of the cultural and culinary diversity that Buffalo has to offer.

Buffalo is a city of extremes -- both historically and in the present day. Historically speaking, you are dealing with a city, which at the turn of the century had more millionaires than any other city in the country. At one point, more immigrants came through the Erie Canal via Ellis Island than almost any other port. From the 60s to the 90s, and with the closure of various automobile and steel manufacturers, the city was dealing with a bit of a struggle.
