Self Titled

An overlooked gem that did manage to get an AcademyAward nomination back in 1999. This score by JohnWilliams is one of his best. Williams' style isinstantly recognizable and the music demonstrates histalent for writing smaller more intimate scores. Themusic on the album is gorgeous and quite differentthan what ended up in the film where the final resulthad tracks horribly cut by the director Alan Parker. The Lanes of Limerick and the finale track Back toAmerica are both heartbreaking and uplifting at once.Williams pays homage to English composers Britten andVaughan Williams and is comfortable using his ownstyle that suites the Irish setting of the picture. The only downside of the album is the dialogueexcerpts that do cover some of the beautifulinstrumental solos.
