Agony and the Ecstasy

Alex North's Oscar-nominated score to the 1965 film, The Agony and the Ecstasy, is a superb re-recording under the baton of the composer's friend, Jerry Goldsmith. The score is a gorgeous orchestral work full of exciting organ and brass flourishes. The religious modal sound of the music majestically underscores the conflict between the ruling Pope Julius II (Rex Harrison) and the artist who did not wait to paint, Michelangelo (Charlton Heston). The opening Main Title is a moving piece that builds to a breathtaking close with the organ. The antiphonal brass fanfares for the battle music have a timeless feel to them. Overall, the score is beautifully performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. A classic score from the much-missed modernist film composer, Alex North.
