Goapele - Even Closer
- Goapele's "Even Closer" is a calm, melodic album that brings attention to her seductive vocals upon hearing the first song. "Even Closer" deals with everything from romantic matters and childhood pain to political issues as well as spirituality. This part South African, Bay-Area native is definitely adding subtle, yet significant flavor to the soul scene.
"Even Closer" speaks to the inner soul, with the opening song "Closer" symbolizing many young, aspiring individuals who deal with the hope-filled struggle of paying dues before success can be attained. There are ample ballads to feed that inner romantic in all of us, from the bass-driven "Romantic" to the jazz-cafe reminiscent "Butterfly Kisses," but my ultimate favorite of the many good songs on this album is "Catch," which deals with the complexity of staying true to oneself while attending to someone (or something) else's needs and desires. Now that song is deep baby! So well thought out and nicely delivered. Goapele has the vocal and lyrical abilities that are essential for longevity in the unstable record industry.
"Even Closer" stays away from superficial themes, reverberated club beats and mediocre lyrics. In turn, it stands as a new and inspirational album that definitely deserves recognition.
