Eminem - Encore
- Okay, we know that Eminem has built his career on "Shock and Awe," saying the types of things that would get us sent to our rooms with no dinner (even as adults), but he is also one of the most talented emcees to ever touch a microphone. It’s those skills that force even the harshest of critics to mention his name when the "Who’s The Best MC" conversation comes up. Unfortunately, "Encore" does nothing to help your argument for Em as being the greatest. "Encore" shows you exactly what can happen when good emcees get lazy.
It was the emotion, honesty, sense of humor, social commentary, and even bratty charm that made songs like "Stan," "Lose Yourself," "The Way I Am" and others work. On "Encore," he trashes those characteristics and chooses to rap an entire song in the voice of Triumph, The Comic Dog on "Ass Like That." He also leaves his skill of just straight-forward rhyming at home and brings with him the bright idea of throwing up on record for the song "Puke," which is about...…get this...…his ex-wife Kim!!!! How many times can he rap about the same thing over and over and still be considered creative and original?
There is nothing new or original on this album. He ruins the personal "Toy Soldiers" by using the hook from the cheesy '80s pop song of the same name. Only the politically charged "Mosh," and the autobiographical "Yellow Brick Road" serve as the albums only two bright spots. Even the usually stellar production from Dr. Dre comes up stale, flat, and uninspired.
Allow me to quote a verse from, "Rain Man"
He says," And I aint even gotta make no god-damned sense/I just did a whole song and I didn’t say shit."
You said it Marshall, not me
