IOMMI - The Dep Sessions
- Thirty-four years after Black Sabbath released its first album, the riff machine that is Tony Iommi is still cranking out great guitar driven rock music. The release of his second solo effort "The Dep Sessions" has Tony hooking back up with Glen Hughes with whom he recorded 1986’s "The Seventh Star." ( This was originally conceived as an Iommi solo album, but due to pressure from the record company it was released as Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi.)
Iommi and Hughes pick up right where they left off in 1986 with their brand of blues infused heavy rock. "Gone" and "Time Is the Healer" are the heavy songs on the album displaying Iommi’s deliciously dirty guitar tone. "Don’t Drag the River" and "It Falls Through Me" showcases Hughes’s amazing voice going from a bluesy soft to a soulful hard rock high that is reminiscent of his days in Deep Purple.
This album was in the can in 1996 and was floating around as a bootleg under the title of "The Eighth Star" through Black Sabbath trading circles. But now is available as an official release that will please fans of late 80’s-early 90’s era black Sabbath. Even though the mix of drums is weak, there is something very appealing to the dirty production that tickles my heavy metal heart. I haven’t been able to pull this one out of my CD player for the last week. It gets four devil horns out of five, though I would like to hear a more even mix between this bluesy heavy rock sound and Iommi’s classic sinister riffs of the early Sabbath days.
