Ashanti - Concrete Rose
- The first lady of Murder Inc. is back with her third album, and while Concrete Rose opened with a strong first single- the rock infused "Only U," the rest of the album falls short of what one would expect from a platinum selling artist's third record. It seems as though Ashanti has chosen to take the safe route, sticking to the same hip hop ballads that made her a star in the first place.
The problem with Concrete Rose is that many of the songs sound similar to each other and stick to the same basic formula, a hip hop beat with silky vocals and the obligatory Ja Rule appearance.
Concrete Rose does have some bright spots. "Don't Leave Me Alone" featuring 7 Aurelius is one of the best songs on the album and has great single potential, while the fun, disco infused party track "Turn It Up" makes you want to do just that. "Wonderful," Ashanti's current radio hit with you guessed it, Ja Rule, is offered as a bonus track.
And while Ashanti has long been criticized for her vocal skills, she has clearly improved since "Foolish" and sticks to her range which is a plus.
While Ashanti's die hard fans may be pleased with her efforts to stick to what she's famous for, Concrete Rose does not do enough to showcase the star's talent.
