John Legend - Get Lifted
- There’s no questioning Kanye West has the Midas touch. He’s proven himself as a solo artist, a writer, and a producer. His protégé, John Legend proves West’s vision yet again, with his debut release “Get Lifted.” Legend’s influences, including Lauryn Hill and Al Green, are echoed in these fourteen songs. In addition to producing the album Kanye West lends his writing and rapping skills. Other appearances include Snoop Dogg and Miri Ben-Ari.
The intoxicating “Number One” is addictive with its feel-good strolling beat. In "Ordinary People" Legend pleads with us to 'Take it slow.' However, Legend is taking it too slow, making for one of the weaker tracks on the album. “It Don’t Have to Change” celebrates Legend’s gospel roots in a celebratory hymn.
The record stands as a cohesive work of art, a rarity in today’s environment of single driven releases. The journey which Get Lifted takes you on, is reminiscent of the journeys Lauryn Hill and Kanye West have taken us on in the past. Legend adds his own flavor to the mix, resulting in a feel good romp through his world.
