Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning
- Singer/Songwriter Conor Oberst has outdone even himself simultaneously releasing two full-length albums on Saddle Creek, the label he helped create. On ‘I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning,’ Oberst utilizes the same simplistic, yet beautiful guitar melodies and poignant lyrics that initially got him noticed, but this time he’s nailed it. His raw and unpolished sound is surprisingly becoming of him, especially considering his many creative supplements. The charming reworking of Beethoven’s ’Ode To Joy’ works out wonderfully. Emmylou Harris’ supporting vocals heed a surprisingly synergistic effect. Oberst’s inclusion of a few, slightly improved, rare fan favorites: ‘First Day of My Life’ and ‘Poison Oak’ compliment the rest of the album nicely. And, of course, evident throughout the album is the pure introspection that can only be achieved through a songwriter’s utmost sincerity. Conor Oberst, using little more than his guitar and his poetic words, has really come into his own and is proving his comparisons to the great Bob Dylan to be more than warranted.
