JoJo - JoJo
- JoJo’s self-titled album is put together by famed producers such as Soulshock & Karlin and Vincent Herbert who have worked with the likes of Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, and Destiny’s Child. It’s no wonder that its sound is very soulful. But more than half of the 14 songs are that way and it’s a bit too much soul for one album and a 13-year-old girl. Listening to this CD, you can’t deny that JoJo’s voice, which can rival Mary J. Blige’s, is mature and developed far beyond her years but the cheesy lyrics and monotone quality of the tracks don’t do it justice. She sings about boys, love, and friendship but the incessant slang lyrics make it too tacky even for puppy love. “Ice is cool but I’m looking for more” from Baby It’s You, and “When I’m kicking it with. I have fun with you” from The Happy Song, are just a few of the words that kill the soulful mood. Plus, the album’s overly-soulful quality makes it hard to distinguish one song from the next. The only hit-worthy tracks are Leave (Get Out), which has already become a hit, and a rendition of SWV’s Weak, which was already a hit in the nineties.
