Shakira - Fijacion Oral Vol. 1
- Shakira is one of the brightest stars in Latin music, and her latest production, 'Fijacion Oral Vol. 1' proves why.
As is customary with the multi talented superstar, she wrote and produced most of the album herself. In the Latin world, she is widely known for her skills as a writer, something that often seems lost when her work is translated to English. Lines such as "Pesa mas la rabia que el cemento," or "rage weighs more than cement" may seem a little offbeat in English, but in Spanish sounds like pure lyrical genius.
Much of the album is dedicated to love; pining for it, finding it and losing it. "La Pared" captures all these feelings, Shakira's voice projecting an urgency that gives the song emotion. An acoustic version is also included, and could easily be her next single.
"La Tortura," the first single of the album is to put it simply, amazing. This song, which features fellow Latin star Alejandro Sanz, is different from any other we have heard from Shakira. It's danceability and witty lyrics have made the song a hit in both Spanish and English markets.
The most interesting track on the album is "Obtener Un Si," a throwback to old school Latin music, which was known for its passion and simplicity. The musical arrangement, using mainly trumpets, flute and piano along with Shakira's soft vocals sets a romantic, nostalgic mood that makes you want to sit back with a glass of rum and reminisce about your first love.
Edgier tunes such as "Escondite Ingles," will satisfy her more die hard fans who prefer the dark haired, hark rocking Shakira from back in the day to the blond one who belly dances and sings pop songs.
