John Williams
War of the Worlds hits the big screen this summer in an updated version of the Sci-Fi classic from director Steven Spielberg. Along for the ride again is the director's famous composer and 're-write artist' John Williams. In a stunning move the latest score from the maestro is now in a dense and textural/non-melodic approach. Basically there isn't a melody on display that you're going to walk out whistling at the end of the movie when the lights come up. Just like in the director's liner notes for the album the music proceeds to 'get under your skin' instead. Williams' War of the Worlds is a wonderfully brutal and ominous work that shows a fascinating command of rhythm and timbre driving the musical dimension of a film. This score is for fans of contemporary classical music and the album gives much to bite off and chew. There is plenty of action material and the music will remind listeners of the composer's Minority Report. Recommended for the long time Williams' admirers.
