Grey's Anatomy: Original Soundtrack

If you have a great sound system, if even for the opening single, consider buying the "Grey's Anatomy" soundtrack.

I recently bought this CD because of my love for the TV series, and I'll be damned if it's not every bit as good of a companion piece. As far as I'm concerned, in a just world a soundtrack to a film or TV show should not be a mix of songs "inspired by" (reference U2 and Batman Forever here), but a compilation of songs instrumental in the telling of the story of the film or show it's accompanying. With that in mind and in the age of iTunes and Napster, buying singles as opposed to albums (respective props here to Green Day for assembling an album -American Idiot- that contradicts that impulse), people have come to appreciate the "compilation mix's", and whether it's Garden State or "Grey's...", the people responsible for assembling these mix's have tapped into the very best of what you're not hearing on Z100.

The opening track by Postal Service is one of the best openings to a CD I've ever heard since Bono and Co. opened Joshua Tree with "Where the Streets Have no Name".

Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" beginning may make you think for a few seconds that you're having an epileptic fit, but it's just your speakers going a little nuts bouncing the sound around. If you're not in the mood for "balls-to-the-wall" ecclecticism and prefer the more melodic grounded sounds, you may want to skip to Maria Taylor's "Song Beneath the Song", which paired with Tegan and Sarah's alterna-pop "Where Does The Good Go", invites you into trancelike aural euphoria (and I dare you not to sing along to Taylor's contribution!).

With additional contributions from Get Set Go (a male fronted band channeling Lizzie West's "Chariot's Rise"), Rilo Kiley, Ben Lee (who manages to make "catching a disease" sound like fun), the Radio, and The Ditty Bops, this may be one of the best compilations out there right now. Until of course, "Grey's.." comes out with Mix #2.
