We Are Scientists - With Love and Squalor
- Franz Ferdinand and Hot, Hot Heat! I recently revived a long-standing rock and roll tradition of better living through excess, which is currently being continued through the likes of We Are Scientists. The trio from New York could have easily played the tweed jacket, self-indulgent smarminess of recent indie bands, but no instead they insist on indulging in things far more illicit.
This being their major label debut, the boys of We Are Scientists bring with them a serious bag of tricks, like thick guitars and “get down” hooks that lend the album, With Love and Squalor a need to listen again immediately feel.
With song titles like “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt,” the boys have a healthy sense of irony in them. Other songs explode with a sense of humor and a dose of foresight, like “Cash Cow.” All of the inhabitants of this disc are wrapped up nicely with the release of their first hit, “Lousy Reputation,” the kind of single that exemplifies the best a band has to offer, without underscoring what the rest of the album has to offer.
We Are Scientists have made here a singularly excellent effort that herald’s in the feeling that this is going to be an excellent year.
