Yellowcard - Lights & Sounds
- Often times it can be more than a daunting task to recover from a monumental success, a task Yellowcard most recently had to over come. With their new album, Lights and Sounds, the boys from Yellowcard have on their hands something to be proud of, if it isn’t anything too different.
Several years have gone by and Yellowcard has worked out their roster, and finally decided to stick with their (now trademark) sound. Heavy on the guitar, but light on the lyrics; that is to say, they like to sing about the weight of the world and how it’s getting them down. Yes, these guys are in their twenties and still doing that. Personally, I thought that was Linkin Park’s job, but at least Yellowcard can do it with some panache and style. For instance, “Rough Landing Holly,” perfectly mixes Yellowcard’s ability to hedge the difference between too much pop and too much self-indulgence.
Let’s face it, they’re really into themselves and their apparent trials and tribulations of being rock stars, who are from Florida, but live in California. Wow, that really is something to sing about. Actually, given how unexpectedly catchy this album is, maybe they’re on to something.
Lights and Sounds is certainly derivative, mainly of the band’s previous efforts, but it still packs enough of a crunchy punch to sit in the CD player for more than a few turns.
