Karsh Kale - Broken English
- In Broken English, percussionist and songwriter Karsh Kale puts his Indian heritage to music, using the tabla (the paired hand drums of northern India) and electronic percussion. His musical influence comes from growing up in London via New York, and has resulted in the creation of a highly original musical style.
In Broken English, Kale gives us rock-n-roll, hip-hop and atmospheric pop with the workings of some talented folks, such as MC Napolean Solo, vocalists Trixie Reiss (The Crystal Method), Sophie Michalitsianos (Sparklehorse), Diedre (Ekova), Vishal Vaid and award-winning Bollywood film composer Salim Merchant. Karsh's music shouldn't get labeled as different or exotic, because it is a combination of the hip-hop trends that are currently being heard. Hip-hop artists, such as Jay Z, regularly incorporate variations of world music in their albums.
Kale's sound is definitely a mix of rock, rap, electronica, Indian classical and Indian film music. Best described as something from New York, you would definitely hear these songs all over the club and lounge scene of New York and Los Angeles. It's a mature sound and gets one out of the pigeonholed type-casting of certain genres of music.
