Jace Everett - Jace Everett
- The self-titled debut album from Indiana native turned “born again Texan” Jace Everett is all things country: energetic, relatable, and most importantly, “honest,” which is just what the artist intended. These qualities make for enjoyable listening, even when it comes to pleasing the most hesitant of country listeners (yours truly). Also admirable, is Everett’s hand in writing most of the songs, adding to his credibility as a talented singer, songwriter, and bassist.
“Everything I Want” starts us off with an upbeat tale of a man’s blind love for a woman, who is all sorts of bad. In the face of all opposition, the warnings of his preacher, his mom, heck the whole town, he stubbornly but happily chooses the path towards inevitable heartbreak. On “Bad Things,” Everett is blatant and unapologetic in his seduction: “I don’t know who you think you are but before the night is through/ I wanna do bad things with you”, calling all cowgirls to stop mid-line dance and come on over. “I Got to Have It,” is another dance tune with simple lyrics, and feel-good instrumental breakdown, featuring animated piano, guitar, and harmonica solos. Lastly, “Between a Father and Son,” true to form is a moving, introspective, tribute to the powerful family ties going back to Everett’s grandfather and reaching to his own son.
Everett may have made country music a safe place to explore for many unacquainted listeners, while pleasing those who already love country, which just might be the hardest to please of the two.
